Ceramides
Naturally occurring intercellular lipids that constitute ~50% of the stratum corneum barrier. Cosmetic ceramides mimic skin barrier lipids to restore moisture retention.
Niacinamide
A water-soluble form of vitamin B3 used in cosmetics as a skin-conditioning agent. One of the most widely tolerated actives in modern skincare, commonly formulated between 2–10%.
Hyaluronic Acid
A naturally occurring polysaccharide found in human skin, connective tissue, and joint fluid, used in cosmetics chiefly as a humectant and skin-conditioning agent. In topical products it is almost always the sodium salt (Sodium Hyaluronate) because it is smaller and more water-soluble than pure Hyaluronic Acid.
Parabens
A widely used family of preservatives (21 individual parabens reviewed by CIR) preventing microbial and fungal contamination in cosmetics.
